Search results no longer start with ten blue links. Google shows AI-generated summaries for many queries, and people increasingly ask assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations. Businesses want to know how to appear in those answers.
The good news: it is not a separate discipline. It is SEO with higher standards.
How AI answers choose sources
AI search features retrieve pages from a search index, then summarise them and link to the sources. Google has said there are no special requirements to appear in its AI features beyond being indexed and following its standard search guidance. In other words, pages that are crawlable, trustworthy and clearly answer the question are the ones that get cited.
1. Answer the question directly
AI systems extract passages. Make yours easy to extract:
- Use the question as a heading and answer it in the first sentence or two beneath.
- Follow with detail, examples and context.
- Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons.
2. Say something original
A summary of what everyone else has written gives an AI system no reason to cite you. Original data, first-hand experience, real prices, local examples and expert opinion are what earn citations.
3. Show who is behind the content
Trust signals matter more when machines choose sources. Name your authors and their credentials, keep your About and Contact pages complete, and make sure your business details are consistent across the web.
4. Use structured data
Schema markup helps machines understand your content with less guesswork: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article and FAQ. It is not a guarantee of inclusion, but it removes ambiguity.
5. Build your reputation off-site
Assistants draw on what the wider web says about you: reviews, news coverage, industry directories and community discussions. Digital PR and genuine customer reviews influence AI answers as well as traditional rankings.
6. Keep the technical basics sound
- Do not block search engine crawlers you want to be cited by.
- Make sure key content is in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts that fail to render.
- Keep pages fast and up to date, with visible publication and update dates.
7. Cover topics in depth
AI systems often break a question into several related searches. Sites that cover a subject thoroughly, with connected pages on each sub-topic, are more likely to appear for at least one of them.
Measuring AI visibility
Reporting is still developing. Clicks from Google's AI features are included in Search Console's performance data, and visits from assistants appear as referral traffic in your analytics. Many businesses also check a set of important questions manually each month to see who is cited.
What not to do
Avoid mass-producing AI-written pages to chase every possible question. Google's spam policies cover scaled content created mainly to manipulate rankings, whatever tool produces it.
Our SEO content service builds pages that both search engines and AI assistants can trust and cite.
